Wild Caucasian countryside, ancient land of walls and kings, cultures clashing, open spaces, snow capped mountain facade. The first sip of wine on the tongue is unexpectedly smooth. I’m riding through hills and history, tiny towns, buzzing with the stories of new friends. Their passion is intoxicating. “Intangible heritage,” officially, giving way to humanity of place.
Rkatsiteli, saperavi, mtsvane, kindzmarauli, kisi, varisperi kaxura. Sheep’s cheese, fresh vegetables, soft bread. The danger of the chacha, the magic of the qvevri, the smell of fresh mint tea. Gaumarjos. A toast to us, that we may live happy lives that are longer than the life of the winemaker’s one hundred and fifty year old vine.
